Hello Bells and Whistlers! As most of you know, we live in the home of the weird and we at Bells and Whistles absolutely loves capturing all of the weird Austin has to offer! So, the very talented Jessica Mims thought it would be fun to seek out a little bit of the uniqueness that makes our city great.
a person who collects things of a specified type, professionally or as a hobby.
Why do humans collect things? Vintage Barbie dolls to Coke a Cola signs? Some people collect for investment, some collect the unusual: bad poetry, dad jokes, old sexist ads from the 60s for the comedic aspect. And some collect to broaden their social lives, attending swap meets and exchanging information with like-minded souls.
We sought out a few of these “ collective souls” if you will ( womp womp) and picked their brains with these three questions: 1. What is your favorite piece? 2. What is your first piece? 3. Why did you start collecting these? True to austinite fashion, they had some delightful responses!
Our first collector is the lovely Melissa Lorraine Hagen. She likes to collect tiny universes in glass, also known as terrariums. We contacted Melissa and here’s what she had to say!
B&W: What is your first piece?
MLH: My first was the jellyfish. I was decorating my room and thought, “I need a pet that won’t die…”
B&W: What is your favorite piece?
MLH: My favorite piece is the tiny blue whale, maybe because I like the idea of having a whale in a jar as a pet. Or the Dragon? He is just SO fiesty.
B&W: Why did you start collecting these?
MLH: I kept finding little creatures, or maybe they found me. I just couldn’t turn them away!
Stay tuned for more oddities! The collections and collectors only get better from here! Hope you are having a lovely spring!
